Better Than Sex Cake – Recipe

Okay, I know the name of this cake is out there (Better Than Sex Cake, lol!) but I didn’t come up with it!  It’s super easy to make and I promise you, you won’t regret making it!  And by the way, if you like poke cakes…check out these other poke cake recipes!

I learned how to make it from a co-worker and am super thankful she decided to bring it in as a treat one day for lunch!  😉

Want to make it yourself?  Here’s what you’ll need:

Ingredients:

*9×13 glass baking dish
*1 pack of Moist Supreme Devil’s Food Cake Mix (or plain chocolate cake mix)
*Whatever ingredients your cake mix calls for – this varies, so look at the box!  😉
*One can of Sweetened Condensed Milk
*One bag of Heath Bars (Mini/Fun Size)
*1 tub of Cool Whip (thawed)
*Caramel Ice Cream Topping

Directions and Photos:

Step 1 – Mix and bake your cake mix (follow the directions on the box)

Step 2 – Let the cake cool for 10 minutes and then get out a wooden spoon!

Step 3 – Using the end of your wooden spoon, poke holes in your cake.  Don’t worry, your cake is going to look like hot mess too.

Go ahead and poke a few more holes then I did!

Step 4
– Drizzle the sweetened condensed milk into the holes that you poked in it and all over the top of the cake.  Then, take your caramel topping and drizzle that on top of the cake too.  It should look something like this:

Step 5 – put your cake in the fridge until it’s cool…this is important so that you don’t melt the Cool Whip in the next step.

Step 6 – Now that your cake is completely cool…it’s time to top it!  Take your thawed Cool Whip and spread it on the top of the cake.  Then, take your Heath Bars (I crushed about half of the bag of minis with a rolling pin, you can use less or more according to what you like) and spread them all over the top of the cake.  Lastly, you’ll take your caramel and drizzle a little bit more over the whole top of the cake.

This is what you’ll get:

Step 7 – You can eat it right away, but I’d recommend putting it back in the fridge for a bit.  The longer it sets, the more the sweetened condensed milk and caramel have to soak into the cake.

Enjoy!

Oh, and remember to put the cake back in the fridge if you have left-overs due to the Cool Whip!  🙂

*As a side note…you can try making this cake with other types of candy other than Heath Bars.  I think this cake would be really good with chopped up Snickers or Reese’s Cups! *

Please let me know what you think of this cake if you make it!  🙂

I've actually had this cake before, but I've never made it myself. I'm totally going to have to soon though. Looks soooo good!

  2. CMM & JMM says:

I've done this before, using slightly different ingrediants. I use the Betty Crocker German Chocolate Cake mix and instead of Heath bars, smashed Butterfingers/caramel is my poison. But you're right, it is amazing regardless of what is used. And SO easy!

  3. Modern Momma says:

CMM and JMM – Oh my goodness! That sounds amazing too! I will need to try those! I love German Chocolate Cake and hadn't even thought about Butterfingers! Thanks for the suggestion!

  4. Kristie says:

Wow, that looks delicious! I definitely need to try it sometime. Unfortunately my husband isn't a huge sweets person so I'd probably end up eating it all myself! 😛

  5. Modern Momma says:

Kristie…it's worth it! Lol, I ate most of ours…my Husband isn't a huge 'sweets' person either and he really liked it too…so maybe you can bring your Hubby to the dark side! 🙂

I make this recipe every year and I have found putting my caramel sauce and sweetened condensed milk, open of course, on top of the stove while the cake cooks they pour a lot easier. I also use Mrs. Richardson caramel sauce it’s buttery and oh so good

      • Pamela Roberts says:

Agree with you using Mrs. Richardson’s caramel sauce. So much better than the Smuckers. I like the idea of using smashed Butterfinger as well.

My mother gave me this recipe years ago. She found it in the Brandon Sun. \it was called Loretta Lynn’s chocolate cake. She used score chocolate bars. It has been a hit for many years.

  7. Britt says:

Done this before with slightly different ingredients. Also if you use a rubber spatula and spread the caramel and milk into the holes it makes the cake a lot sweeter.

A friend for work made this for ‘pot luck’ day at work, it was amazing! How long is it good for in the refrigerator?

I make this cake, my mom always made it when I was a kid, but we spread a tub of marshmallow cream after you pour the condensed milk while the cake is still a little warm! It is DELICIOUS!! We usually just sprinkle chopped pecans on the top of the cool whip, but I bet Heath bars are great, too! One of my all time faves!

  11. Christina says:

I’m making one right now. The cake is in the oven as I type. Instead of Heath bars, I’m using Hershey’s Symphony bars with almonds and toffe chips. I can’t wait to see how this turns out

  12. Ms Jayda Jazz says:

Does it matter if you use a chocolate cake?? Do you think I could use a yellow cake mix?? Would it taste too different??

    • Tammy says:

I always use a butter pecan cake mix and it is Awesome!!!!! Have made it that way for years and if I take it to a potluck everyone wants the recipe. Try the butter pecan flavored cake mix if you like the butter pecan flavors….you won’t be sorry.

Can this be made the night before? I’m wondering if it would enhance the flavor or would it become soggy. I can’t wait to make it!

    • Morgan says:

Yes! 🙂 I actually like it better when it sits overnight since I think the flavors are even better! I didn’t find it to be too soggy the next day. Let me know what you think after you make it. 🙂

  19. Heather says:

I did end up making the cake the night before. It was scrumptious! It was perfect for our girls night out. My friends raved about it… and devoured it. My hubby was disappointed that I came home with an empty dish. I reassured him that I would make it again soon. Thank you for the delicious recipe and great advice!

when I make one of these for work I always have to make two because my kids love it so much. I don’t do the sweetened condensed milk. After I poke the holes. I use a whole jar of hot fudge. And a whole jar of caramel topping. I get both in the ice cream topper isle. I put both those things on about ten min after I get the cake out of the oven. Then fridge over night. And right before I’m leaving with it I put the big container of cool whip (my kids love cool whip) on top then a whole bag of Heath bar bites I buy in the baking isle. I’ve won the baking competition 2 years in a row at work. So easy and every one just raves about this dessert.

My family loves this cake. I call it something else because of the grandchildren (curious minds want to know). They all have different taste so I divide the finish touches into thirds. My usual toppings are Heath, Reese’s and pecans. It is a fantastic “take along”. Love your site. I know you put a lot of time into sharing with us. Thanks!!!!

  22. Kathryn says:

Hi, thank you for the recipe, and I just made it, and thought I would let you know that it doesn’t say the Heath bar topping in the ingredients, so I didn’t know to by it till after I read the directions. Thanks

    • Morgan says:

You sure can…it will of course change up the taste of the original cake but I’m betting it will still be very good! If you make it, let me know how it turned out! 🙂

  23. Janet says:

I used to make this for my sons and dare them to tell people the name. Lol. My recipe calls for a layer of chocolate fudge (Smuckers or Hershey’s jar) slightly warmed so it will be pourable. I put it over the condensed milk layer and use the caramel on top. Yummy.

  24. Tea says:

I made this cake for Easter and everyone went bananas for it! ????..Making it again for Thanksgiving but doing half with candy and half with nuts for my Mom. Taste amazing either way. Thanks Soooo much for sharing this recipe, I had been looking everywhere for it.
    Happy Thanksgiving all! ☺

  25. Dale says:

I just made this last night using peanut butter cups and I can’t wait to serve it and eat it today with my family! Will let you know…

  26. Lara says:

I always stir my carmel & sweetened condensed milk together & bake two cakes at the same time to share the mixture with. It is still very delicious & our grandchildren love lots of cool whip . When our family is all together it is easy to have 30 or more in the house at one time.

  27. Amber says:

My step mom made this last week gave some to my son and I. I swear my first bite was a reaction that I was speechless until swallowed! Is this even cake! I said out loud! Now I am making it myself cake just got done enough time for me to let that baby cool while I go pick my son up from school. He’s gonna be quite excited. If you haven’t had this cake yet or made it yourself you need to get your booty up get those simple ingredients promise not regrets!

  28. Debra says:

Ive made this cake many many times. Tip… I use a butter pecan cake mix instead with the heath and caramel. Those flavors all merry together so well, so many compliments on it!
