If one doesn’t think being a mom makes your life busy enough, you’re crazy! I’m currently a SAHM (stay at home mom) and chose not to go back to teaching (I may eventually go back once Mabel is old enough to go to school). And I made this decision because I didn’t think I’d be able to part from her yet and because I thought the stress of being a teacher would drain me, now allowing me to be at my best for Mabel. But, for the past year while pregnant and now, with Mabel, I wasn’t liking not being able to ‘contribute’ to the household income. My husband assured me that if I needed anything, such as clothes or other items, he would get them for me. But, I’ve always been Ms. Independent and enjoyed making my own money.
In the online mom community women are always asking about work from home options, and I’ll admit that I got swept up in the commotion. I started finding lots of ideas and suggestions, and most I figured out were either scams or would be ridiculously hard to make any bit of money off of. Most of these options revolved around working for a larger company like Scentsy or Avon (both of which are good options but being that it seems like almost every military spouse does one of these or something similar, there are already a ton of people who sell them in the area that I live). Same thing goes for selling fitness products such as being a Beachbody Coach or selling Body By Vi (I don’t even pretend that I’m healthy enough to sell health products, lol!). Another option that pops up is blogging. Well, I don’t blog for money nor do I make anything off my blog. I’m almost convinced you have to be a fancy shmancy political blogger or super popular celebrity blogger to make bank, ha! Now, I make a tiny bit off of YouTube, but I call that diaper money. It’s normally enough each month to buy a decent sized pack of diapers…woo hoo!
Since none of these options were panning out, I thought I might jump on the Etsy bandwagon. Didn’t seem too hard to set up a shop and I figured I was crafty enough to at least give it a shot. I figured there wouldn’t be too much to lose if the shop crashed and burned, lol! I really enjoy making quilts…so that was that. And the name of the shop came easily. Mabel has been my inspiration lately and she’s a sweetie = Sweet Mabel.
The shop has been up for almost 2 months now and I’ve had 11 sales, which I’ve been thrilled to have. I pour my heart into each item (everything is baby and child related) and am truly happy to have this opportunity to work from home and enjoy little Mabel at the same time. Now my ‘salary’ is nowhere near what it was when I was teaching, but it’s a comfortable amount.
If you are thinking about working from home, know that it can be done! Don’t expect to get rich but there are plenty of opportunities that you can do all while staying at home with the kiddos (or kid!). My best suggestion is find what you love to do and think of a plan on how you can make it work for you at home.
