We Joined Our Local CSA!

You all know that I’ve been trying to lead a more healthy lifestyle and so is my husband.  He’s decided to run a half marathon in October (he likes to run marathons and half marathons and I think he’s crazy, you’ll never see me running one) so it’s pretty important that he eats better and gets back into shape too.
Anyway, we found out last minute yesterday that it was the last day to join our local CSA.   I had no idea what a CSA was but I looked into it right away since several ladies kept talking about how great it was.  This is what I learned:  A CSA stands for ‘Community Supported Agriculture’.  Basically it’s a group of local farmers that get together to pre-sell produce over a period of weeks throughout the year.  The purpose is to support local farmers all while getting super fresh foods at a great price.  And CSA’s are all across the United States.  You can even Google one in your area!  😉
We have a really awesome farm right down the street from us (they have all you can pick strawberries, peaches, apples, blueberries and so on) and they are in-charge of our local CSA.  I looked into their program on their website and it sounded like a great idea.  Each week for 19 weeks you go to the farm every Thursday and pick up a big box of fresh produce.  The total cost is $560 for the entire 19 weeks.  Sure, sounds like a lot of money right off the bat but think about how much food you’re getting for that amount of time.  It’s actually a pretty good deal.  I mean, you can’t even get this fresh of produce at the grocery store.  Each week, the items you get varies…so it’s kind of a surprise.  And I love surprises!
Now you might be thinking, ‘What if I get something I don’t like or don’t know how to cook?’  And trust me, these questions popped into my head too.  To answer about the not liking part, if I don’t like something, my husband can find someone at work to give it to.  I’m also looking at this as an opportunity to try new veggies and to give veggies I don’t like another chance.  As for not knowing how to cook something…every week inside the box we get is a packet of recipes!  How neat!?  More new things to try and I figure there is always Google if I don’t know what to do with something.
Today was the first box!  And this is what we got:
I was most excited about the strawberries, apple cider, and mint!  There was a great recipe included for strawberry mint lemonade.  I can’t wait to try it, and when I do, I’ll post the recipe for everyone!  On the other hand, there were asparagus and radishes!  I don’t like either…but I’m going to try to give them a shot again since it’s been years since I gave up on them!  I’ve got some new recipes to try with them…and once again, I’ll keep you updated and post the recipes if they are a success.
If this interests you, I highly suggest you check to see if there is a CSA in your area.  I can’t wait to start eating healthier tomorrow!
