Confession – I Still Don’t Like the Dark

Pitch black…that’s what I was seeing super early this morning when the power went out.  It was around 1am (yeah, I was still up trying to finish a quilt to mail out for my Etsy shop) and as I was cutting pieces of my quilt, there was a quick zapping sound and then all the lights went out, ac powered off, and it was very quiet.  I sat there for a second figuring out what had happened…which didn’t take long since there was a big storm surrounding us with lots of lightning and thunder.

I sat there for a minute completely stuck.  I couldn’t see anything and it’s so rare for it to be this completely dark.  There’s always a little glow from a button on something electronic.  I suddenly had a flashback to when I was younger and was scared of the dark…probably from a combination of too many ghost stories and then once accidentally seeing true crime pictures on the National Geographic channel for something or another.

I don’t consider myself scared of the dark…I just don’t like it…especially if I’m by myself.  And did I mention I’m 26 years old?  Haha!

Then my mind started wandering.  If the power is out all night, is the food going to go bad in the fridge/freezer?  and Ugh, it’s going to get hot in here since the AC isn’t on.  Pretty petty concerns, right?

Then my mind jumped to the Amish.

You know, these people:

We actually live among the Amish here in Delaware.  I have Amish neighbors.  But they live without electricity due to religious beliefs.  And wow….I couldn’t do it.

I guess I sound pretty ADD with how my mind was jumping around.  But this is what the dark did to me.  Anyway, I grabbed my cell phone and used it to make my way up the steps to our bedroom and figured I’d try to go to sleep.

Laying in bed, I kept thinking I was seeing things.  Don’t you just love how your mind plays tricks on you?  With the occasional glow of lightning illuminating the bedroom, I tapped on my husband’s shoulder for comfort.  He just huffed and rolled further away from me.  Ugh…so I just continued to lay there.

And then with the grumble and a zap, the electricity came back on.  I was saved….the night light was back on.

Like I said…I’m 26 and I’m not afraid of the dark…I just don’t like it.

I also dislike the dark. It’s not that I am afraid of it, I know it won’t hurt me, It’s just a little unsettling I guess. It’s not what I am used too.
My dad had a saying. ‘It’s not the dark that will hurt you, but rather what is in the dark’.

Exactly! And the fact that I wasn’t prepared for the power to go out didn’t help (not that you’re ever prepared for that to happen!).

I understand you, because I don’t like darkness and sometimes I am afraid of it. I know, this feeling from my childhood. Sometimes it happen amiss…

I’m 27 and the same way lol You are not alone. I don’t like the dark. I know theres nothing to be afraid of but it’s unsettling not knowing what’s in front of me. Especially if it’s not my home. I watched way too many horror movies growing up.
