Confessions of a First Grade Teacher

My First Classroom

As most of you know, I taught first grade for three years before getting pregnant and deciding to be a stay at home mom.  As I was flipping through my photos on my computer today, I was happy to stumble upon pictures from classroom parties and other school events over the past few years.  I often find myself wondering what those kiddos are up to and realize that the kids in my first class are now going to be 5th graders this fall.  I feel old, lol!

While reflecting today on what already feels like a past life, I was reminded why I miss those six and seven year olds.  They are full of brutal honesty.  They won’t hesitate to ask you what the red bump on your face is (Yep, thanks little kiddo for pointing out the giant zit that I had spent all morning trying to cover up with concealer), or even ask if you’re pregnant because your dress poofs out…I had to explain what an empire waistline was to a little girl and that I wasn’t wearing maternity clothes like her mommy (this was before I was pregnant).  I respect honesty, especially through the eyes of a child.

First graders also don’t have filters….and trust me, teachers find out about everything that’s going on in the home.  I knew when mom was mad at dad for staying out or even went to jail.  But I’d get a giggle out of certain stories, once a little girl told me that her daddy was really hairy and mommy had to wax his chest!  I didn’t know how to respond to that one.  I also knew what a child watched on t.v.:

If you don’t know…those are the lyrics to the theme song of COPS.

And lastly, some things are just funny accidents…

She meant to write FUNKY….Guess she didn’t hear the N.

I think eventually when Mabel is old enough to go to school, I’ll end up going back to work.  I loved teaching and the children…and I miss it.  But right now teaching will just have to wait while I’m Mabel’s teacher for the time being.

I’m sure you learned all kinds of interesting things from those 6 and 7 year olds. 😉 I want to go back to work when Clara goes to school as well.. but, we’ll probably have another child and then I’ll want to stay home with him/her too.. and so on and so forth, haha.
