My New ChristmasTradition

First of all, let me say that I hope you and your family had a wonderful Christmas (or whatever holiday you celebrate!).  🙂

Let me tell you about the Christmas tradition that I started with Mabel.  She will get a brand spankin’ new hardcover book each Christmas with a personal note written in it from me with the date.

book tradition personal note every Christmas

I’ve always LOVED books and reading…and I want to foster that same love for books in Mabel that I enjoyed as a child (and still do!).

What better gift can you give a child than the love of books?

I discovered this tradition (don’t get me wrong, I’m positive a ton of other families do this) purely by accident when I stumbled upon Yertle the Turtle by Dr. Seuss a week ago and remembered how much I couldn’t get enough of Gertrude McFuzz (one of the short stories included in this book) when I was younger.  I instantly remembered my bedtime stories with my mom and it brought a smile to my face.  I didn’t think twice and bought it for Mabel because of all of the good feelings that the book evoked in me.

I figured to make this book special, I’d write her a note in it and include the year/what Christmas it was.

So every Christmas from now on she will get a hardcover book with a special note from me.  I have tons of books from my childhood that I cherished and can’t wait to share with her and plenty of new books out there to experience with her for the first time.

I’m so excited just from writing this…

And maybe….just maybe, someday when she’s in her twenties or thirties she will be reading one of her Christmas books (maybe with my future grandchild?), see my note, and be transported back to good times of reading bedtime stories with me.  A gift that will long outlast her ball popper toy or some clothes.

How much neater can a gift get?  🙂

What kind of holiday traditions have you started with your family?

You have to read it! It’s my favorite Dr. Seuss book and I couldn’t believe that my husband hadn’t heard of it either. I hope you and your family had a wonderful holiday too!

Merry Christmas!! We’ve carried on the tradition that started when my mom was a kid of opening new pajamas and a new ornament every Christmas Eve…certainly the pj’s won’t be passed on, but the memories won’t fade! 🙂 Love the book idea, I can’t wait to make Raegan as obsessed with reading as I am!

Merry Christmas to you too! 🙂 I LOVE your tradition! I saw some pics on Instagram of others who have similar pj traditions and their kiddos looked soooo excited! I think I’m going to incorporate that one when Mabel is a little older. 🙂 Thanks for sharing.

I read somewhere that to help save money/not spend a fortune on your kids at Christmas and to keep them grounded as well.

    Something they want.
    Something they need.
    Something to wear.
    Something to read.
