It’s Time For Some Spring DIY Projects!

With the arrival of spring, I’ve had to come to terms with the outside of my home looking like a hot mess.  We bought our house knowing that we’d have to put a little work into the landscaping and after being here for a year and a half…it’s time.

My husband and I don’t exactly have green thumbs or the handyman gene so when it comes to home projects we’re a tad intimidated.  Honestly, this photo shows the extent of my husband’s DIY capabilities:  he ran over the septic tank cover with the lawn mower and while we’re waiting for the new one to come in, he thought duck tape would be the solution.  I love the guy but it’s safe to say I didn’t marry him for his handyman skills, lol!  😉

But recently I’ve been lucky enough to be a part of The Home Depot’s DIY Spring program and have been assured that with their help, anyone can accomplish whatever goal he/she has set for themselves.

I guess we’ll find out!

Okay, so this is what our yard has going for it right now (I’m cringing as I post these photos for you all to see!):

And you can see our lovely porch swing that I’m hoping to have up in the next week or so.

Yep, it’s pretty dismal.  Everything has either died over the winter or is looking pretty sparse due to neglect.  Our home was empty for two years before we moved in, so that of course didn’t help the landscaping situation.

Among several DIY goals, Hubby and I would like to clean up the front of the house along the walkway to our front door.  I want the weeds gone and I want to fill in some of the empty spaces with either planters or new shrubbery.  I also think that I would enjoy starting my own vegetable garden.  I’ve always had this secret yearning to be able to grow my own vegetables and strawberries.  It would be neat to give Mabel home grown snacks and save a little money on produce that I wouldn’t have to buy at the store.

This is the back corner of our yard where I would love to put a small garden.

And I’m in luck since The Home Depot has an amazing resource, The Garden Club, on their website!  There are tons of step by step DIY projects listed, lots of tips/advice, how to videos, and even a $5 off your next $35 coupon when you sign up (it’s free!).  And trust me, being that I have no idea where to start when it comes to  my outside projects, the site is a huge help to me (and Hubby)!

Stay tuned…over the next 3 months Hubby and I will be doing a series of DIY projects thanks to the Home Depot!  And of course it will be documented on the blog!

My husband and I are horrible at landscaping upkeep too! We are military and have been station ined Florida for almost a year now. The grass is SO different here. We are having to resod our yard because we killed it.
