Preparing to Build Our Edible Container Garden – #DigIn

I worked with The Home Depot on this project, they provided all the DIY yard goodies and as always, my opinion and thoughts are completely my own! 😉  This was a completely new experience for me…I’ve never built an edible container garden and Hubby and I couldn’t wait to get started!

If you want to get caught up on the previous posts in this series, here they are:
Part 1 – It’s Time For Some Spring DIY Projects
Part 2 – We’re Building a Garden

Now that we had figured out the best placement of where our raised garden bed container should be placed in our yard, we were off to The Home Depot to get all the items needed.

Home Depot Dover

Now the neat thing about our Home Depot is that the Dover Speedway (Nascar racetrack for all you race fans!) is right behind it.  You can see part of the grandstands peeking out behind the top left of this picture.  But as you can see in this photo, The Home Depot is ready for spring and had lots of items outside and ready to go for any DIY project that you could dream up!

Did I mention that Mabel was along for the trip?  She was in charge of reading off the shopping list on The Home Depot’s Garden Club site. Lol! (all of the directions and items needed to make an edible container garden yourself are included in the link!)

Mabel at The Home Depot
Yes, my child is barefoot. 😉  But you can see the raised garden beds that we chose below her feet!

The one item that was a must for us were the raised garden bed kits and these are the exact ones we bought:  Greenes Fence 48in. x 48. in. Cedar Raised Garden Bed.  We ended up getting three!

There was such a huge selection of seeds are planted veggies and fruits to grow that we had a hard time narrowing down what we wanted to get.  Our garden wouldn’t be big enough to grow everything.  BUT of course I had to grab strawberries since I love them and I know that Mabel really enjoys them too.

Our plants
Strawberries, tomatoes, spinach, some herbs, and a few garden tools.

One thing I want to point out in the above photo are the Bonnie plants on the left.  Do you see that they are in pots?  Well the really neat things about those is after you peal the label off (which is recyclable), you can just plant it and the pot biodegrades into the soil!  Super easy!

And these are the seeds we decided to tackle:

seeds!

Cucumbers, carrots, sugar snap peas and watermelon.  I don’t have a green thumb so let’s hope that these little seeds have a chance…my fingers are crossed!

Upon checking out, the sales associate was nice enough to give us a military discount.  The Home Depot supports the military and since my husband is in the Air Force, we were able to get a little bit of money back (which went right back into buying more garden items!).

Let’s just say that SUV was packed…

Our packed car

And now we were ready to build our garden!

Stay tuned for tomorrow!  I’ll show you how we put our garden together!  😉
