I’m One Mad Momma

Over the past month I’ve been dealing the damage caused to our house when our water heater burst.  And I thought it was going to be a pain but seriously not bad enough for me to want to yank all of my hair out…I was wrong.  I’m getting ready to go all Britney Spears nuts and shave my head, lol.

Our house was ‘fixed’ by two men hired as subcontractors from our general contractor (our home insurance has paid this company to return our home to its prior condition).

Pictures speak a thousand words:

Home repair nightmare
I guarantee you that my cabinet bases weren’t cracked or looked like cheap paper crap before the flood…and no one bothered to clean up all the grout dust/water off my cabinets.
Home repair nightmare
Note the careless cut in my baseboard, the absence of grout by the wall, and paint on my cabinets.
quarter round fail
Hmmm…I thought that I wasn’t supposed to actually be able to pull the base from the floor…not to mention my air vent grate is now nailed to my cabinet base.
staple sticking out of carpet
Okay, ignore the pug hair but note the staple sticking out of my carpet. Every time I’ve watched professionals put in carpet…they never used staples to keep the carpet from moving.
carpet pad fail
First off, my carpet was supposed to be reinstalled but it wasn’t secured.  Next, the tack strip was facing the wrong way (there are even arrows on the strip itself!!!) and lastly…where the heck is the rest of the carpet pad?!
home repair fail
I guess this is supposed to qualify as repairing the pad from where they had to cut the old portion out due to water damage. There is a gap and they didn’t secure the pad to the floor at all!
home repair fail
Is my molding supposed to break off?

Shocked yet?  I’m pissed.  Like really pissed.  Note the last photo with the chunk of molding…Mabel was walking around with the piece in her mouth!  My child could have chocked on this piece!  The top picture is to show how it apparently was attached.  The molding was cut wrong and there should never have been an inch piece placed where it was.

Many of you saw my FB post about workers texting while working…it gets better.  Let me list for you all the things that were done in my house:

  • texting constantly and then asking me to borrow my phone charger!!!!
  • washing his face in my kitchen sink
  • going through my fridge to put drinks in without asking me first
  • leaving food/drink trash in my home
  • leaving blood on my hand towels in my bathroom from his face (from picking it)
  • asking me details about how I met my husband/how long we’ve been together
  • walking in first thing in the morning without knocking
  • washing tools and leaving caulk on my utensils in my kitchen sink
  • asked to use my husband’s tools to do some of the work

I’m sure there are more things but I’m just mad after writing all of this.  I’m not even sure if I should be more upset with the work or the behavior.

Since everything was completed late Friday evening I haven’t been in touch with our general contractor but believe me, he’s going to hear all about this and WILL fix everything.  I’m not sure if they thought they could get away with this because I’m a woman, but I assure you…I’m pretty savvy when it comes to knowing how things should be fixed and making sure things are done right.  I didn’t want to be hovering over their shoulders the entire time especially since I was taking care of Mabel but the point is, I shouldn’t have had to.  This is just ridiculous.

Sorry for the rant but I just had to vent.  I’ve just got my fingers crossed it will be done by November.

I’ll keep you all posted on this nightmare…

Have you ever had to deal with home repair nightmares?

I’ve never had to, but my parents are real estate agents and deal with this all the time. Keep fighting until you get what you deserve! Which is your house back to the way it was (if not a little improved … Not the other way around). Good luck and keep us updated 🙂

Well I’ll be talking to our general contractor tomorrow and he hasn’t seen any of this yet. I don’t see any possible way that he can think this is acceptable so it WILL get fixed, lol! It’s just been so much of a hassle and it shouldn’t have been this complicated. 🙁

Wow. I’m livid just reading this! That’s just some bullish*t right there. They better fix all that up asap. How’d they think they could get away with that? Also, how rude of them to use your things and run around your house like it’s theirs.

Yeah it’s pretty maddening. 🙁 I seriously have no idea how they thought that this was okay not to mention that this was somehow returning it to the condition that it was before the flood. And I was completely at a loss with how the one guy treated my home like his own…I’ve never had anyone who has worked on my house ever act like that before.

That is awful! I’m so sorry you have had to go through all that. My husband is a firefighter but he is also a builder/carpenter on the side. That kind of work is totally unacceptable and I would definitely file a complaint with The Better Business Bureau. It’s a shame that there are people out there who do not care at all about the shoddy and dangerous work they do. Good luck moving forward.

Granted yours is an insurance issue, but we are blessed that my husband (not a contractor, but a very hands on engineer) can do all these things himself. We’re in the middle of our 2nd DIY renovation. I couldn’t imagine having to hire out and deal with some of the jerks out there.

Good for you for checking up on their work. Tear someone a new asshole over this. When the safety of a child is at risk, you better stay out of mama’s way.

Wow what crappy work not to mention rude very unprofessional workers. Sorry you had such a bad experience. I hope your contractor can get everything back to normal and let’s those guys know how disappointed he is in their work and how badly it reflected on him.
I hate having workers in the house.

Wow!!! I can not believe that!!! How in the world are the subcontractors at all?? They must not have a single license. I wonder if your insurance company knows that the contractor THEY have to do the job subbed it out. Or maybe you your insurance just gave you a check to cover the cost of the repair. That is what we did that when we had a bad leak with our dishwasher. I really hope that the contractor will help you since you pretty much need it all taken out again.

Yes. I’m in the middle of poor painting now. Granted it’s not as bad as yours but I hate having to take more time for something that should have been done right the first time. Plus I think he thought it was a great job because I didn’t call and let him know the first day. I just have been busy.
