We Got Orders!

Well I guess ‘we‘ didn’t get orders but my husband did.  So it’s official…we’re moving in July!

And I tell you I have been through the emotional gamut over the past 24 hours.  We got a base that wasn’t on our list so I’m not going to lie…was slightly upset.  But after some wise words from a friend (Haley, I really appreciate it!) I realize no matter what base you go to, it’s what you make of it.

So without further ado…we are headed to Shaw AFB in Sumter, South Carolina.

It’s not Florida by any means but it sure isn’t the worst base we could have been sent to.  🙂  My only major gripe (yes, go ahead and laugh at me and tell me I’m ridiculous) is that the nearest Target is 45 minutes away.  BUT there is a free standing Starbucks which we don’t have here in Dover.

And to give you a better idea of where the base is if you aren’t familiar with the location is that it’s about 45 minutes east of Columbia, SC and about an hour and a half NW of Charleston.

Anyway, we plan on living off base again and I’m really looking forward to the much more mild weather, the local state parks, hiking, and (hopefully) the Southern hospitality!

But now it’s crunch time since our house needs to get on the market within the next 30 days or so.  We’ve got painting to be done in a handful of rooms and since I couldn’t sleep at 5am this morning, guess what I was doing?

Taping…I’m not a good enough painter to not use it.  🙂  It was a pretty productive morning.

Now I just need to call painters for some estimates to do the two story entryway and the stairway…I know better than to try to get on a ladder that high.  😉

Know anything about South Carolina?  Any cities/places we should plan on visiting or things we should do while we are there?

I have ALWAYS wanted to visit South Carolina! I hear nothing but good things about it! The Carolinas seem to have a reputation of sweet, laid-back-living! Enjoy!

I have lived in NC my entire life so a lot of trips to SC…we love it there! My brother goes to USC in Columbia and that is a cute little town with good resturants and a nice zoo we just took our daughter to. Charleston is amazing with a ton to do. I don’t know if I could survive being so far from target though

Sumter is a great location. It’s a smaller town but it’s growing. We go there for Christmas every year for my family get together and every year it seems to get bigger! You’ll be close to Columbia, which has great shopping, a big zoo and the State Fair. You’ll also be decently close to Charlotte which also has great shopping (IKEA!!!) and loads of other things!! The mountains are so great! You have to visit Greenville and the surrounding mountain areas. Lots of great trails and other sight seeing. Charleston is an obvious must if you’ve never been there. I was born there and it’s by far my favorite place in the world…it’s even where my husband proposed!! Then there’s Myrtle Beach and the rest of the Grand Strand. I grew up close to the beach and hate that I live over 4 hours away now in NC.

Basically, I love SC and would move back in a heartbeat! There’s so much to explore and do!!! The weather is amazing, too!

See? No one has anything bad to say about SC;) Excited for you guys and your new adventure! It will be fun to decorate a new house (at least that’s what I think every time we move)! 🙂

I love SC! You will too! Wanted to take my little one this past January for a “Let’s getaway from the cold” vacation, but plans fell through with the husband’s time off from work.

Shaw was one of the choice we could’ve ended up at! I kind of wish we had instead of Barksdale! Good luck with the upcoming move! Hope everything goes smoothly for you!

I think South Carolina sounds like a great home! While it may not have been your first pick (or a pick at all!), at least you are no longer playing the waiting game which I know must have been so stressful. Selfishly, we, of course, love that y’all will be a little further south. 🙂 Plus, imagine how cute Mabel will be with sun-kissed skin now that y’all are in a warmer climate and a little closer to the beach.

I found this blog post a while back while we were moving about packing up your home, but it also has a lot of good tips about staging your home. I thought I would include the link for when you are doing your thing at 5 am… get some sleep, girl!! http://veronabrit.blogspot.com/2011/09/moving-tips-tricks-staging-your-home.html

    P.S. I’m already pricing plane tickets. 🙂

I just remembered…Sumter is basically antique shopping central! If you’re into that kind of thing there are a lot of little antique shops all together in one place!

Welcome to SC! I live in Columbia, and I think that Target you mention just might be my Target! Maybe we will bump into each other sometime! Haha I live off the main road from Columbia to Sumter, on the Sumter side of town. And I’m a Gamecock, so you’ll definitely want to pull for them and not those Clemson Tigers! Ha! I’m kidding… I married a Clemson Tiger, so it’s all good. Anyway, yes Columbia has a great zoo, and an awesome children’s museum called Edventure! And you will definitely enjoy visiting Charleston and some of SC’s other beaches. Myrtle Beach is pretty commercialized, so there’s lots to do there, but there are plenty of more low key, relaxing beaches, too! Personally, I think those are great for taking kids. They’re less crowded so there’s lots more room on the beach for them to play. Anyway, I’m sorry you guys didn’t get one of the choices on yourlist, but I hope you like it okay. Feel free to email me if you have any questions or need anything, or even want someone to have play dates with. My daughter, Avery, will be 18 months old next week, and I’m sure she’d love to play with Mabel. We could always meet up at the zoo or something. Good luck with your move!
