Tips for Dealing with Fevers in Babies and Toddlers

Fevers in babies (six months and up) to toddlers can be pretty scary…I mean, I remember the first time Mabel had a fever and how I felt helpless and unsure of what to do.  I scoured my baby books for answers and was able to figure out what to do and successfully lowered her temperature.

But it’s still a situation that’s no fun for anyone; kiddos are miserable and parents feel horrible that their little ones feel bad in the first place.

Tips for Dealing with Fevers in Babies and Toddlers

A few tips that have helped me to manage Mabel’s fevers in the past have been:

  • Fevers are any temperature over 100.4 (don’t hesitate to call your physician if you are concerned about your child and ALWAYS contact your physician if your child is under the age of six months).
  • Get an accurate temperature.  In smaller children, the most accurate temperature reading is gained from a rectal thermometer (don’t just rely on if your child feels warm, always take their temperature).
  • Be prepared!  Have your at home medicine cabinet stocked with both children’s acetaminophen in liquid and suppository form.  If your child is sick and throwing up, you’ll be thankful you have the suppository form available…plus you don’t want to have to make a middle of the night run to the store to buy them.  It’s all about getting your kiddo relief as quickly as possible!
  • Don’t fear a fever.  I know that’s easier said than done but just know that a fever is your child’s body’s way of fighting off an infection.  Once again, if you’re ever concerned, don’t hesitate to contact your child’s doctor for advice or help.

As mentioned above, one of the items we keep stocked in our home just in case a fever arises is FeverAll®.  They have three strengths for children from six months to twelves years of age and though a suppository never sounds fun, it’s an accurate way to make sure your kiddo gets the correct dose and might be the only way to administer medicine if he/she is really sick/throwing up.  Hey, I speak the truth…and all of you mommas know you’ve been there with a super sick kiddo one time or another.

On a side note…FeverAll® is hosting the FeverAll® Fever Ready Giveaway, which will provide one Grand Prize winner with a $250 gift card to a FeverAll® retailer of their choice (e.g., Walmart)!  Seventy five additional winners will win a FeverAll® Fever Ready Prize Pack which includes a box of FeverAll® Infant’s Strength Suppositories, a digital thermometer and a dry-erase decal that allows parents/caregivers to note emergency medical numbers for their little ones.
