Fevers in babies (six months and up) to toddlers can be pretty scary…I mean, I remember the first time Mabel had a fever and how I felt helpless and unsure of what to do. I scoured my baby books for answers and was able to figure out what to do and successfully lowered her temperature.
But it’s still a situation that’s no fun for anyone; kiddos are miserable and parents feel horrible that their little ones feel bad in the first place.
A few tips that have helped me to manage Mabel’s fevers in the past have been:
- Fevers are any temperature over 100.4 (don’t hesitate to call your physician if you are concerned about your child and ALWAYS contact your physician if your child is under the age of six months).
- Get an accurate temperature. In smaller children, the most accurate temperature reading is gained from a rectal thermometer (don’t just rely on if your child feels warm, always take their temperature).
- Be prepared! Have your at home medicine cabinet stocked with both children’s acetaminophen in liquid and suppository form. If your child is sick and throwing up, you’ll be thankful you have the suppository form available…plus you don’t want to have to make a middle of the night run to the store to buy them. It’s all about getting your kiddo relief as quickly as possible!
- Don’t fear a fever. I know that’s easier said than done but just know that a fever is your child’s body’s way of fighting off an infection. Once again, if you’re ever concerned, don’t hesitate to contact your child’s doctor for advice or help.
