Off To The Midwives’ We Go

Here we go again…round #2!

Week 12 / 13
A day short of 13 weeks. 😉 (from last Saturday)

Last week we ventured out to our first meeting with our new birth center here in South Carolina…and I was nervous!  Not sure why, I’ve done this before and I’ve even had midwives before.  I guess I was just hoping that the birth center would live up to my expectations and that I’d feel comfortable with the nurses and midwives that worked there.

So here’s how it went down:  Upon walking in the doors, I felt like it was the right place for me.  Good sign!

My first appointment was with one of the registered nurses.  She went through all the standard pregnancy info and so on.  Then I was shown that I was responsible for testing my own urine with test strips at each appointment (super easy!) and how to record my own weight on my patient sheet.  I love that they trust me to do all this stuff.  😉

Then I had a tour and got to see the birthing rooms.  One word = AMAZING!  I didn’t think it could get better than the birth center in which I had Mabel but this place is really new, with big birthing rooms and everything you could want…including a giant jetted birthing tub in each room!  I may actually get to try having a water birth this go around.  They have several different types of birthing balls, huge bathrooms with big showers, and very comfortable looking beds that you would see in a home.

After the tour, it was time for my meeting with one of the midwives.  I’ll meet all of the midwives over the span of all of my appointments since I won’t know who will be on call when I go into labor.  They figure it’s a great way to get comfortable with everyone, and I love it!  Now normally I won’t have two meetings at each appointment but this time it was different just because it was my first visit there.

The room was different than rooms I’ve had at appointments before.  No exam table…just a nice little couch.

Midwives' Office

The midwife came in and introduced herself and everything just felt really natural.  We went over some basic things and then she said she would try to find the heartbeat for me with a doppler.  Now, I’ll admit we already have a doppler at home and found the heartbeat at 8 weeks…so I was actually able to help direct her to wear baby #2 has been hiding out.  😉  And after a bit of searching, we heard the fast paced rhythm…a lovely little heartbeat.

My next appointment is in 4 weeks, so I’ll be sure to give you all the rundown.

Thanks Sarah. 🙂 I’ve found out that I got bigger a lot fast compared to when I was pregnant with Mabel. I need to get in touch with you on FB and see what you’ve been up to since I LOVE your blog.

I have been following your youtube vlogs when you were pregnant with Mabel! My husband and I have been trying to get pregnant for a year. We are finally expecting our little baby and he/she is due Feb 20th! I am so excited to follow your blog seeing as we are so close in gestation! Anyway, congratulations! So happy for you =]

Congrats Miriam! We are pretty much exactly at the same points of our pregnancy so I hope you’ll keep me updated! Are you going to find out the gender?

Thanks so much! We are going to find out what it is =]. I would really love to do an elective ultrasound and find out early, but my husband doesn’t think the extra $85 is worth it. boooo. How are you feeling? Are you going to find out the gender?

How did you find the group of midwives? Did you use a website search? I am looking for a group that would offer something like this, but I have not found a birthing center that is remotely close to the gem that you found.

Amanda, I originally did a search for midwives in South Carolina on Google when we found out we were moving here and realized that there aren’t a ton of midwives who do home births so I knew I’d be having another birth center baby. The only catch is that it’s 2 hours away…so it might be something you have to be willing to drive to. Not all areas have them either, there were some bases that if my husband had got orders to, I would have been in a hospital since there just weren’t other options. The key is just finding someone who you feel comfortable with and is open minded to natural birth if you end up going with a doctor. Also, keep in mind that if there is a local birth center, go and just check it out. My birth center in Delaware was older compared to this one but it was just as safe and the midwives were amazing! Keep me posted on what you find out and if I can help in anyway!
