I’ve Always Secretly Wanted To Be A Redhead…

July 1, 2012

I’m a natural blonde and have always wanted to be a redhead.  I can’t tell you how many times I’ve told this to people, including hairdressers and in response I always get:  ‘WHY?!  You’re a natural blonde and people are always trying to dye their hair your color!’  Well, that’s all fine and dandy but when you’ve grown up with dirty blonde hair, it doesn’t seem that amazing, lol.

I’ve been tempted before to get it colored in a salon.  I know red is one of those colors you shouldn’t try at home, especially when you have blonde hair.  Been there and done that!

I remember the event vividly, I was in 8th grade and thought it would be simple to dye my hair at home.  Went to the drugstore, picked up a pretty red color off of a Clairol box (even though the directions said not to if you have blonde hair) and happily went home to try it out.  AND I thought it had been a great idea to get a semi-permanent dye since if I didn’t like it, it would always wash out….right?

I followed the directions. EXACTLY.  And upon washing out the color, I saw my hair was a lot darker than the chick’s on the box.  I freaked.  I started washing it out like crazy since I had read dish washing soap would help take out semi-permanent color.  And what was a left with?  A light pink mess.  Yep, my hair was a pale pink….not red.

Some crying ensued.  No, more like a lot of crying.  Nothing can ruin an 8th grader’s existence in school faster than doing something like unintentionally dying your hair pink.

So, off to the store my mom and I went.  It was late on a Sunday night and that’s why I didn’t go to a salon to get it fixed.  I found a permanent blonde color which I prayed would help…and thankfully, it took it back to my natural color.

Anyway, that little event has scared me into not dying my hair again but I think it might be time to give it a try.  I’m older, have more money to spend on going to a salon and can pay for it to be fixed if I end up not liking it.  Plus it’s time to get my little behind to a salon since I haven’t been since November when I was still pregnant!

I’m thinking maybe just doing some red highlights first to see if it’s something I like before taking the plunge of diving into being a complete redhead.  Who knows?

These are some of the reds I’m thinking of:

I’m pretty sure my favorite is the lightest red from top pic of Debora Ann Woll and who doesn’t love Adele?  I’m thinking the last pic is too dark for me even though I think it’s gorgeous!

Have you had any hair color disasters?  Think I can pull off being a redhead?  I’m know I’m pale enough…lol!

I’m a natural blonde myself and know what its like to want red hair 🙂
I tried it a few years ago first with a nonpermanent, it looked good but was so different at first, that I nearly started to cry 😀
After it was gone I went to a salon and we made permanent highlights. light red and very thin highlights, but a lot of it. And it was awesome! After that you can add new red highlights every time until it looks the way you want. And with a little blond between the red its more natural 🙂
At the moment I am blonde again, it was no problem to change it back.

This makes me feel a lot better! I’m pretty sure I’m going to color it a strawberry blonde first to kind of ease into it without doing anything drastic. I’ll be sure to post pictures when I get around to dying it!

I love red hair, but with my skin tone, the only color that looks good is the dark brown hair I’ve got! Good luck changing your color over; I think red will look really pretty on you!

I’m going to do it! Lol, I’ve made up my mind…worst thing that can happen is that I’ll hate it and then I can just dye it back. Love your blog by the way! 😉

I have always wanted to be a redhead. And much like you, I have been asked why I’d like to do it and that people would love to have my natural colour. It’s similar to yours.
I’ve never had any hair disasters. I have never used off the shelf hair dye. I don’t have enough confidence in my self to do that.
I am now on my way to becoming a red head, well kinda. I’m going for a dark Auburn look. I’m doing it gradually. I’m going with High lights.

I think the hair colour in the picture of Adele would look beautiful on you!!! Can’t wait to see what you do!!!!

I can’t believe that I had enough courage back in school to do it! It’s a lot easier to fix mistakes now since I have my own car and can pay to have it fixed if I hate it. I pretty sure I’m going to color it soon so I will post photos as soon as I finally get around to doing it. 🙂

I”m a natural strawberry blonde and I dye my hair dark/bright red now. I used to do a very pale red just to bring out my natural reds more. (Most people told me they could barely tell a difference.) I think you’d make a pretty redhead!

I’m pretty sure I’ve worked up the guts to do it! I’ll keep you posted and will put some pics up as soon as I get it done. 🙂

I’ve ordered the color…and I’ll blame you if it doesn’t work, haha! I’m going to start off strawberry blonde before I do anything crazy or dark.

The first one looks like it’d fit you best. I’d always wanted to try reds too. In university I managed to get Little Mermaid red one winter with Natural Instincts semi-permanent dye. I loved it, and loved even more the fact that in a couple of months it washed out and didn’t leave my hair a fried mess. Found and following you from the GFC hop. Love your glittery blog, Morgan. Have a cheery day!

Lol, I think the Little Mermaid was what originally started it when I was little. I had her as a doll and just loved doing her hair, haha! I wished I had better results with the semi-permanent dye but I think with blond hair everything pretty much turns out to be permanent. I’m following you back! 😉

I think I’m going to! I can always dye it back if something goes horribly wrong but at least it would make for another good blog post. Ha!

As latina, with pale skin, red eyebrow and natural lightest red hair make me not confidence, I have so many freckles, ugly isn’t it, I never confidence, people always bully me because Im look different, people always say that is your mother cheating with redhead white men, that’s hurt me, so I dye my hair dark deep brownhair, like always latin people have

Redheads are ugly, why change from blonde? Blondes have more fun anyway!
