Mabel’s First Dance Class

Mabel Ballet - Toddler Tap and Ballet Class

This morning rolled around and guess what?  It was Mabel’s first day of toddler ballet and tap class.  Pretty exciting!

But I’m pretty sure I was more excited than she was…it was like another toddler milestone and she was just along for the ride.  Lol!

Mabel Ballet - Toddler Tap and Ballet Class

So let me give you the play by play and just a heads up, all my photos were from before and after class.  I didn’t want to be the mom pulling out her dslr in front of all the other moms (plus there wasn’t time)…maybe I’ll whip it out next class.  😉

Anyway, we got there…walked to her class and then the moms were told to go wait in the lobby.  I already knew we weren’t going to be allowed in the class…but they have cameras in each class that you can watch in the lobby.  Okay, I can understand that.  Mabel didn’t care that I was leaving (or so I thought).

That’s when it started.  Crying…from a bunch of little girls in the classI started getting teary eyed and then demanded my pregnancy hormones get themselves in check!

While waiting in the lobby we were told that we didn’t get to actually watch the classes until 3-4 classes in.  Really?  I wanted to see her first class.  🙁  Oh well.  I think they ideology behind it was that the first few classes can be rough of the little ones and they didn’t want to stress the parents out of the kiddos that were crying.  Then I got to spend the next 45 minutes being proud of my little girl because she didn’t cry when I had left.  She must be enjoying herself.

But then 10 minutes until the end of class, I heard a cry that could have been Mabel’s.  The mom next to me said that she hoped it wasn’t her little girl, and I quietly was hoping it wasn’t mine either.

While checking my email I heard ‘Mamaaaa!’ and looked up to see Mabel first in line out the door to get me in the lobby.  She had a big smile on her face and quickly ran over to give me a hug and a kiss.  She didn’t look like she had been crying…but that’s when the teacher came over and told me she had been crying off and on but that she had still danced.  Okay…not sure what to make of thatI hope she wasn’t misbehaving.  There was another little girl that came out super red in the face looking like she had been crying too.

I’m going to guess this happens to a lot of kiddos on the first day…so I’ll keep my fingers crossed that next week goes a little smoother.  My heart was sad to hear that she had been crying but she had been very happy when leaving the class so I guess it couldn’t have been that bad?

Have your kiddos taken any types of classes?  Did they cry?  Did it get better after a few classes?

It’s hard!!! My youngest son cried every.single.day of preschool, but I knew he needed to stay with it because eventually he needed to go to kindergarten (and the other day he started first grade). It’s heartbreaking, but it can only get better.

I’ve got my fingers crossed it’ll be easier for her each class…I’ve had a handful of friends tell me that their kids did the same thing. I just want her to be happy and have fun!

Cute! I’m glad she did ok. I think it’s pretty natural for them to cry. It’s something new and they aren’t used to someone else telling them what to do (other than the parents).

Both of my girls dance and absolutely love it….they did cry the first class and were apprehensive the first few. It will get better, and I am sure she will love it 🙂

That’s good to know! After thinking about it for a while, I’m pretty sure she must have only gotten upset when they made her take her tap shoes off (which she loves!) to put on her ballet shoes, lol! So I hope next class will be easier since she’ll know what to expect. 🙂

Good for her that she kept it up even though she was anxious. We used to do swim lessons where parents weren’t allowed. I think it distracts the kids. Heck, I’ve seen 10 year-olds stop in the middle of dance class to wave at their mom yelling “mom, mom”. I usually just stay away. Recitals are when I get to see the work they’ve done.

I completely understand being distracted by the parents so I understand their whole policy (but I still wish they’d let us watch on the tv, lol!). I keep hearing from friends that their kiddos did the same thing for the first few classes so I’ve got my fingers crossed that each class will be easier and easier.

They should have one-way mirrors so you can watch and maybe they could just ask that you not interfere. I would not leave my child that age somewhere where i could not see what was going on. Parents need to see how their child is acting and also how the staff is handling them.

We were actually right outside the room and could hear everything that went on, just couldn’t see. I think they think it will stress some parents out to watch their kids crying and they’ve have parents walk in and disrupt class before. Since we’ve had nothing but amazing first hand recommendations of the place and the teachers were gonna stick it out and see if Mabel enjoys class more…after thinking about it, I think she only got upset after they made her switch her tap shoes (which she loves) to her ballet shoes, lol!
