Slow Cooker Apple Crisp

Slow Cooker Apple Crisp Recipe - tender apples, paired with delicious cinnamon, and the perfect balanced topping goes great with vanilla ice cream!

Last month, Hamilton Beach asked me if I’d be willing to try out their Set ‘n Forget 6 Qt. Programmable Slow Cooker and share one of my favorite fall recipes.  Of course I had to accept since my last slow cooker bit the dust when our old kitchen floodedPlus, with the new baby due to arrive in February, slow cookers are a life saver when it comes to easy meals!

My last slow cooker was nothing fancy, so when my new one arrived I was pretty impressed with all of the extras (plus the price wasn’t really much different!).  Hamilton Beach’s Set ‘n Forget Slow Cooker has three modes:  manual which allows you to cook on low, high, or warm, program which allows you to set a timer and once time is reached it switches over to warm, and probe which if you are cooking a roast will be able to detect when the goal temperature is reached and switches over to warm.  So no matter which was you like to slow cook…you’re covered!

With my love for slow cooking revived…I’ve been pinning recipes like crazy.  And with fall finally starting to hit us in the South, I decided to whip up delicious slow cooker apple crisp for my family.  Mabel is currently in love with anything apple related so I knew she’d be a fan…but my husband is a tad harder to please.  I can never tell which desserts he’ll enjoy or which he’ll pass on…but I can tell you that this crisp was a hit with both of them!

So are you ready to make some apple crisp in your slow cooker?

Here’s how:

Slow Cooker Apple Crisp

Adapted from AllRecipes.com

Ingredients:

For topping:

  • 1 cup all purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup white sugar
  • 1/2 cup light brown sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/2 teaspoon of ground cinnamon
  • pinch of salt
  • 1/2 cup of butter, cut into pieces
  • 1 cup of quick oats

For apples:

  • 7-8 apples peeled, cored, and wedged (I used a mix of Granny Smith and Fuji)
  • 1/3 cup white sugar
  • 1 tablespoon of cornstarch
  • 1/2 teaspoon of ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon of ground ginger
  • 2 tablespoons of lemon juice

Directions:

  1.  Topping – in a medium bowl, mix in flour, 1/2 cup white sugar, light brown sugar, nutmeg, 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon and salt.  Then add in butter pieces and mix in with either hands or pastry blender until it form coarse crumbs (see two photos above for a general idea of what you’re looking for).  Gently stir in oats and then set bowl aside.
  2.  In a small bowl, mix together 1/3 cup white sugar, cornstarch, 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon, and ginger.  Add apples to slow cooker and then stir in cornstarch mixture, making sure to evenly cover apples.  Then evenly pour in lemon juice and give apples one last stir.
  3. Take your topping mixture and evenly cover apples.
  4. Cover and cook for 2 hours on high or 4 hours on low, or until apples are tender.  Then partially uncover and continue to cook for another hour.  This will allow your topping to slightly harden.

That recipe sounds fantastic and looks absolutely incredible! I could really use a “smart” slow cooker. I’ve never had much luck when using a slow cooker…meats always come out dry!

Would love to win this as my crock from my last slow cooker bit the dust. Or well the tile when I dropped it! 🙁

My favorite things to cook in a slow cooker are roast beef, chicken tacos, and chili!

I love French Dips in the crockpot, and I tried a wonderful vegetable beef soup last winter that I’m itching to make again soon (hubby won’t eat soup unless it’s cold outside). My hubby’s favorite would have to be chili.

At our house, we love a good English roast stew! Potatoes, carrots, garlic, and of course the roast! Yummy. And I always serve some good Italian bread and butter on the side. Thanks! : )

My favorite crockpot meal is roast beef w/cream of mushroom soup and onion soup mix. You use the gravy it makes for mashed potatoes. Best comfort meal ever!

I love beans cooked in the slow cooker! So versatile to use as fry mash ups, burritos, taco salads, you name it!! 🙂 (even healthy chocolate cakes!)

I love cooking in my slow cooker. My favorite slow cooker recipe (because the family loves it so much) is Cheesy Chicken Tater tot Casserole. You can find the recipe on Pinterest. Would love to try this slow cooker out though. Mine kinda sucks. I have worn it slap out lol.
