I Failed My One Hour Glucose Test

fruit punch glucose drink - glucose screen pregnancy

There it is…the drink that helped me fail my one hour glucose tolerance test.  I was 27 weeks and 5 days and took it the day after Thanksgiving.  Now I’ll straight up tell you that for the first 30 minutes after drinking the fruit punch glucose drink that I was dizzy and felt pretty ill…but by the time my blood was drawn I felt back to normal.  Only thing was that I didn’t remember feeling like that at all when I took the same drink when I was pregnant with Mabel.  My sense was that I might have failed.

Sure enough, I got a call from my midwife yesterday saying that I indeed had failed.  My level was a high 169 and I had to be below a 130 to pass (which seems a little low to me since most of my friends had to be below a 140 or 135)….either way I still failed.

So what happens next?

Um, I cried.  Score one more point for pregnancy hormones.

The RN that I spoke to this morning from my midwives’ office told me that a lot of women feel bad but that GD (gestational diabetes) is hormonal and if you’re going to get it, there’s really nothing you can do…and most importantly there was nothing I did wrong to begin with.  With that being said, she said to RELAX since nothing is known for sure right now until I take the 3 hour glucose test.  She also said a fair amount of women fail the one hour (and I have to thank all of you ladies for your input on the Facebook page last night since you all pretty much confirmed that was true.) and then go on to pass the 3 hour.  BUT I’m thinking since my original levels were so high, I’m not going to hold out hope, lol!

I’m going in on Thursday and I should know by Friday…fun part is since I have no friends that can help out that day and my husband is away, I have to bring Mabel with me.  Three hours…4 blood draws…and a crazy toddler.  I already know that Thursday will not be a day to easily be forgotten!

Wish me luck!

Hang in there! I, too, failed the one hour with my second daughter and then went on to pass the 3 hour so there is still hope. But believe me, I cried too when I failed! I researched for hours afterwards about what it means if I would have it, etc. and I was a complete basketcase! I do not envy you for having to take Mabel with for that 3 hours. I wish I could help you out since sitting for 3 hours is absolutely no fun for us, let alone Mabel. 🙁 Good luck with everything!

It’s tomorrow so I have my fingers crossed! I’m trying to eat a better diet today and make sure I’m hydrated this time around. And like you, I spent too much time on Google, lol! But the nurse assured me that if it comes back that I do have it, they’ve been very successful and coaching ladies on how to maintain their levels through dieting. Now I just have to pack a giant bag of activities/snacks to keep Mabel occupied for that amount of time! Thanks for the luck, I’m going to need it!

I have ‘failed” the 3 hour test in my previous pregnancy and again with this current one. I freaked out the first time, but everything they say is true, if you have if there is nothing you can do to prevent it and nothing you did wrong. I am an average weight and didn’t have any risk factors. Both times I have been able to manage it with diet and exercise ( neither of which are really a drastic change from a healthy diet, it more about timing and balancing protein and carbs). I was able to have a normal healthy pregnancy ( and completely natural delivery) and normal, healthy baby. Even if insulin is required, it is what is best for mom and baby. Good luck, I will cross my finger you pass and don’t have it, but if you do, it is manageable!

Yeah at first I was really worried it was something I did, but I felt a little better when they said you honestly have no control over it. It sounds super promising that you were able to control it with diet/exercise so I’m going to think positively. They were supposed to call me yesterday with my 3 hour results but never did so I’m thinking they forgot. :\ Now I just have to wait until Monday and you better believe I’m calling as soon as the open, lol! Thanks for wishing me luck!

I stumbled upon this trying to find others who failed the one hr test but then passed the 3 hr test. I failed my one hr by a LOT and just took my 3 hr today. Waiting for the results and I’m so freaked out by it. And sad that I might have GD. How did yours turn out? It helps to know that if I do have it there’s nothing I could have done to prevent. I too am normal weight, eat healthy and exercise a lot. More than most people I know pregnant or not so I was so sure I would easily pass the one hour test. Boy was I wrong!
