Southern Chess Cake + Giveaway

December 4, 2013

This is a sponsored post written by me on behalf of PAM Cooking Spray.

If you’re anything like me, the holiday season is full of cooking and baking…I love it!

This was a second Thanksgiving dinner…yes, second!Β  Lol!Β  We have a big family, what can I say?

Thanksgiving Dinner

Green Bean Casserole, my Hearty Mac and Cheese (recipe here), cranberries, ham, brown sugar sweet potato bake, and mashed potatoes…yum!Β  And all of my baked dishes started off with greasing the dish with PAM!Β  It’s an added bonus with as many calories as I’m eating this holiday season that at least the cooking spray has zero calories per serving!

Baking with PAM

Now after eating comes the dreaded part = cleaning up.

But there are ways to make tackling those pots and pans easier!Β  Did you know that PAM can be used in multiple ways?!Β  Not only is it used to grease dishes before cooking to make sure that food doesn’t stick, you can also use it to spray in mixing bowls and on serving utensils to make cleanup even quicker!Β  Butter and other brands leave too much reside that takes even more time to clean off…no thanks!

Let’s get to what you’ve all been waiting for…the dessert recipe!

Southern Chess Cake

Southern Chess Cake

Adapted from

  • 1 pack of yellow cake mix (standard 18.25 oz size)
  • 3 eggs
  • 1/2 cup of softened butter
  • 1 8 0z pack of cream cheese
  • 4 cups powdered sugar

  1. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees.
  2. Grease a 9×13 baking dish with PAM.
  3. In a large bowl mix cake mix, 1 egg, and softened butter together.Β  Then take the batter and pour into the greased 9×13 dish.Β  Pat down evenly (I used my fingers).
  4. In another large mixing bowl mix together cream cheese, 2 eggs, and powdered sugar.Β  I added the powdered sugar slowly and I used an electric mixer…makes things so much easier!Β  Now evenly pour the cheese mixture over the cake batter.
  5. Bake for 40-45 minutes until the edges of your cake are golden brown.Β  The center will still be a little jiggly.Β  πŸ™‚

Southern Chess Squares

Look at all of the gooey goodness….mmmmm!

Oh that pie looks sooo good! I’ve never had chess pie! I use Pam in my measuring cups when I need to add molasses or honey to a recipe. They just flow right out of the cups πŸ™‚ The first thing I’d bake in the pie plate would be Mr. B’s favorite, Sour Cream Raisin Pie!

I use Pam for when I want to brown meat and don’t want to add any more oil to my recipe. I love pie and bringing a homemade one to family dinners, I only have one “fancy” deeper dish pie plate, which is what I bring. I’d love to have an extra deeper dish one, so I won’t have to wait for people to return my pie plates! (One time I waited a year and a half!)
