Free Lucky Spin Quilt Pattern

Several years ago I fell in love with the vintage Road to Fortune (also known as Wheel of Fortune) hand pieced quilt block…but let’s be real, I don’t have time hand piece anything. I decided to modify the classic block, change the width of some of the pieces so that I could showcase more fabrics and I turned it into a foundation paper pieced quilt: The Free Lucky Spin Quilt Pattern!

Lucky Spin Quilt - Free FPP Pattern

This quilt has been a labor of love over the past 1.5 years…I made all of the blocks when we were living in South Korea and then finished them up after we moved to Virginia. It’s a great foundation paper pieced pattern for beginners…so don’t be intimidated that it took me so long…we just had a lot going on with prepping to move halfway across the world, lol!

If you’re brand new to Foundation Paper Piecing (FPP) and want to try out Lucky Spin, check out my How to Foundation Paper Piece tutorial. It’ll walk you though everything and it uses this pattern so it’s really easy to follow along. And if you’re a seasoned FPP veteran, I guarantee you will love making this pattern.

My scrap bins had been overflowing with Ruby Star Society pieces leftover from other quilts so I decided my Lucky Spin would be made from a rainbow of colors and the background would be a large variety of low volume prints. My backgrounds tend to be boring with most of my other quilts so I always have leftover FQs from bundles of the whites/creams/low volume prints. This quilt was a fantastic solution to my problem!

The free pattern consists of the templates along with giving you all the information on how many blocks to make for a large throw size. It’s super easy to change up sizing if you prefer something different and it’s all easy to figure out with the pdf pattern.

The FPP tutorial helps walk you through how to do everything and gives you some helpful hints that have worked for me. Once you master the basic technique of FPP, you’ll be able to do any and ALL FPP blocks out there! It really can be fun so don’t be intimidated! The Lucky Spin blocks are really easy to start off with.

I currently have my Lucky Spin quilt top completed from these photos and now I’m just trying to figure out how I want to finish it. I’m leaning towards a fluffy batting and possibly hand quilting it. I’ll create an updated blog post showing off what I decide to do.

In the meantime, make your own Lucky Spin and tag me on Instagram while you’re making it. I cannot wait to see modern Lucky Spins popping up in the quilt world!

It’s beautiful! I love your patterns. They are always straight forward and easy to follow. I have been wanting to make the Wheel of Fortune quilt for years, and now I have a pattern (and as always the scraps to do it). Thank you.

Thank you Patti, I appreciate it! It’s such a great classic pattern and I loved being able to turn it into an FPP template. I hope you enjoy it and get to use up all your scraps too! 🙂

Thank you so much for the free pattern! I made this years ago and loved it, but the pattern measurements were slightly off, so I struggled. Delighted to have a new copy!
